St Moritz (2001)
by Grand Lodge out of Masked Goddess (by Marscay)
St Moritz is most often remembered for the controversy surrounding Danny Nikolic’s appointment to ride him in the 2006 G1 Macau Derby. Regular (stable) jockey Robbie Burke, who had ridden St Moritz in all of his lead up wins (including the G2 Macau Guineas) was first declared as the jockey for St Moritz in the Macau Derby at barrier draw. He was later controversially replaced by Danny Nikolic after a request from connections.
St Moritz ran home an impressive 1.75 length winner of the Macau Derby with Danny Nikolic aboard.
St Moritz was sold at the 2003 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for $40,000 – and went on to win over $800,000 in Hong Kong and Macau. He won 6 races in total with the G1 Macau Derby and G2 Macau Guineas being career highlights. He was also unlucky not to win the G3 Hong Kong Macau Trophy at Sha Tin with Craig Williams aboard.
St Moritz is a horse who would have enjoyed success wherever in the world had he been trained.
